Players often lose some athletic ability as they get older, yet experienced defenders can remain extremely effective. How do veteran players maintain their defensive impact? Does improved positioning, anticipation, communication, and understanding of opponents compensate for declining physical abilities?

I think experience can make a huge difference for veteran defenders. They may lose some speed or strength, but better positioning, reading the game, and knowing what opponents are likely to do can make up for it. Good communication also helps them avoid situations where physical ability becomes as important.
