What Made the Old Wrestling Crowds So Loud?

Watching old footage, the crowd reactions can sometimes be incredible. Fans would chant, boo, cheer, and react to almost everything happening in the ring. Were crowds simply more passionate back then, or did the way wrestling was presented encourage stronger reactions?
