What Made The Undertaker’s Early Character Work?

The Undertaker's original character was unlike almost anything else in WWE at the time. Looking back, what made the character work so well? Was it the mysterious presentation, Paul Bearer, the entrance, the physical appearance, or simply how different he felt from everyone else?
