Why Are Some NFL Players Better on Short-Yardage Plays?

Post by DevD »

Certain players seem almost impossible to stop when an offense needs a few yards, while others struggle in the same situations. Strength, leverage, blocking, play design, and decision-making all matter. What makes someone particularly effective when only a few yards are needed?

Short-yardage success isn’t just about size or strength. Some running backs have great balance, low pad level, and the patience to find a tiny gap, while quarterbacks like Jalen Hurts can use their power and timing to push through. The offensive line deserves plenty of credit too; even a strong runner struggles when defenders win the battle up front.

Short-yardage success is about more than being big or strong. A runner needs good balance, low pad level, and the patience to follow his blockers rather than bounce outside. The offensive line deserves just as much credit, too. Even a powerful back can get nowhere if the blocking angle is wrong or the defense reads the play early.

Some players are better on short-yardage plays thanks to their strength, low center of gravity, balance, and ability to keep moving through contact. It also comes down to timing and the offensive line creating just enough space. A powerful running back helps, but good blocking and smart play-calling can make all the difference.
