I think history is probably the biggest reason some rivalries stay intense. Old grudges, memorable matches, controversial decisions, and passionate supporters can give a game an atmosphere that league position doesn’t really matter. Player personalities can add extra drama, especially when someone becomes a hero or villain for the opposing fans.
